I’m Stepping Things Up Starting Right Now (And Some Info About Cheap Domains)

I have come to realise that I need to make this work, and I need to make it work faster. On and off, I’ve been working on passive income for a year now and I don’t have much to show for it. I didn’t make many sites at first, and I didn’t make them “right” anyway (not compared to what I now know).

The good news is that I still make enough money on the internet, building blogs, writing and other services for people. It’s just the passive that I need to improve. Last month I added up my earnings and they came to $273.40. That mainly comes from Amazon and Adsense, with a few other affiliate commissions. I feel as though they should be higher at this point in time.

I will admit I just don’t put in enough work. I work hard but I don’t always focus on the passive side. That’s going to change from today. In fact, I’ve already bought a lot more domains and I’m going to build hopefully 20 niche sites in total this month. This sounds like a lot, but I will be flipping some of those too (sometimes I hate to let the sites go but I need to keep the cash coming in).

Taking Action Every Day

I’ve decided to take action every day, and most of this involves writing content for my niche blogs. I don’t want thin sites that don’t provide value to the readers, so I’m going to research content that’s useful and will hopefully make my visitors feel as though my sites are worth reading. I’d been outsourcing some content before at a low price, but I’ve decided it’s just not worth it. For now I’ll write the content myself and wait until I can afford to pay writers a little more. In the meantime, I’ll outsource backlinking tasks (Yahoo Answers, blog commenting and forum profile link building).

Not having link building to worry about really makes me feel better about getting done what I need to get done. My aim is for 10 niche blog posts per day or 5 article marketing/ web 2.0 articles per day.

I am a fast writer, but I still want to write meaningful content. So I know this is a challenge but I want to challenge myself. I’m posting it here so you’ll all know about it!

Saving Money on My Domains for New Sites

Since I’m building so many new sites, any money I can save is a bonus. So I’ve done some domain shopping and found:

  • Netfirms for $6.95 that come with free WHOIS privacy (.net and .com only),
  • Internet.bs for .net domains that cost on $5.99!

I have domains registered in lots of different places so I need to be careful to keep track of them properly, but I think it’s worth it for those kind of cheap prices!

Sounds like a plan. I’ve been thinking for awhile that I really need to write more and just content out there, but I just haven’t done it. I have a very hard time motivating to write.

    Any tips on writing faster?

Carrie – The motivation is hard for me too. What does help me is doing research in bulk. I usually work in batches of five, so I’ll research five posts all at once, make notes, then when it comes to writing them it goes a lot quicker. Usually I find it’s not the actual writing that’s a problem for me, it’s the getting started! But if I do the research and know what I’m writing before I start, it helps motivate me.

I think that sounds like a great plan! It’s sometimes certainly hard to focus on the passive income streams because the results seem so much slower when they are compared to work that pays off almost immediately (such as writing content for others). But in the long term, it is definitely worth the effort – if you can wait that long. I find backlinking to be the biggest drain on my time (and I really don’t enjoy doing it either), and I think it’s good you are outsourcing at least some of that work while focusing on something you are really good at (writing). Fresh content + lots of backlinks + daily effort should equal some very good results in the near future!

Michelle – I really hope so, I think the daily backlinking and content should really help. My biggest problem is building the momentum and keeping it going, but I hope by posting it here it’ll force me to take action!

Ruth you made a statement that proves your worth.

“I didn’t make many sites at first, and I didn’t make them “right” anyway (not compared to what I now know).”

There are a whole lot of people who fail and dropout. They expected to make thousands of dollars with very little work and just slap something up on the internet.

Are you making them Right now? No, your making them better.

I have spent a lot of time prospecting in the SW deserts of the US. There is an old and wise saying from the Navajo Indians when they are weaving those beautiful rugs with very exotic patterns.

“They always break the pattern in a small way, because only the gods can do it Right!”

Sorry for the long comment. I just hopped it would have meaning for the mortal women.

Steve – No need to apologise for the long comment, that’s a great quote. And very, very true in this crazy world of internet marketing. Always have to adapt to something new. Thanks!

Hye Ruth, Awesome stuff…. It looks like thin sites are getting some crap from Google right now so it’s good your not following that route, I am sure from knowing your writing that your sites are very useful.

I am concentrating mainly on my bigger sites right now as I enjoy them much more.

Forest – I hope one day I can focus on larger sites like you :) For now I’m going to give them as much content as I have time for – and especially enough to make them useful – but I’d love to have some real big ones in future when my earnings increase.

  6. Sara says:

Excellent strategy you got setup Ruth. Glad to see you are outsourcing your back linking. I think that is a very wise investment and will help free you up to actually build the sites. Good luck with your 20 sites. I’m very excited to watch your progress and see you succeed. :)

Sara – Thanks. I just thought, why aren’t things happening for me? And I realised just how little I had actually done passive income wise. Thanks for inspiring me with your own challenge lately!

  7. Excellent plans! Please do keep us updated.

Outsourcing different kinds of links is good idea….comment and forums however is a bad idea.

I haven’t met one yet that didn’t add the spam touch; remember it’;s your name, not theirs. ;)

  9. Ruth, laying out a plan, learning from your experience and determining to be better will be the factors that feed your success.

Keep your life balance along the way and you will have the best of both worlds.

    Cheers, Michael.
