Building a web career is often very difficult. The very nature of working online means that you probably have a million other things that are more important than sitting down and trying to reel out a blog post, write an article or chat on Twitter. Your ultimate goal of building a web career might be important, but day-to-day tasks soon become more pressing than the steps you need to take to reach that goal.
One Step At A Time
When I first started my web career I could see the future right ahead of me. I’m going to be rich, doing something I love and earning thousands each month. It might sound great to have such a goal in mind, but it means absolutely nothing if you’re not taking careful steps to make it happen.
Looking at the future can be inspirational, but it can also stop you getting anywhere. I started to realise that it’s going to take a while before I reach that level. But to make it easier I’ve broken it into stages.
- Write articles in order to make a living.
- When I have a steady income I’ll start spending a little time each week on my own blogs.
- Eventually, when I have enough work, I’ll start to outsource.
- The free time this brings will allow me to constantly work on new projects.
These are just my steps, and you might have something completely different. Even they are still broad, so I am keeping myself on track by using the Niche Blogger training program. There are plenty of other ways you can go about it if you don’t want step-by-step guides such as the Niche Blogger. You could write your own step-by-step list, break down the above points even more, set monthly goals – whatever works for you!
Don’t Get Carried Away
I have so many different website ideas, half-written blog posts, sites that are left neglected. All because I get so carried away. An idea pops into my head and I want to get started straight away instead of finishing off whatever I was doing before. There’s nothing wrong with new ideas, in fact they are great, but you need to finish one thing before you start another.
Put off getting carried away and remember:
- Your idea might not be as exciting or revolutionary as you think it is in the moment of conception.
- Your new idea, no matter how great, will never come to anything if you don’t have the time to work on it.
- All of the hard work you’ve put into your past projects will go to waste if you don’t see them through.
Conclusion
There are two aspects behind my philosophy of building a web career:
- Take it one step at a time.
- Finish every project you start.
Believe me, I don’t always follow my own advice! But I’m getting better all the time.

Haha I do the same thing. I have at least…12 domains and those are just the ones I can remember. I’m making myself focus and have already mapped out the month ahead. April hasn’t been that great so far for me.
