Today I thought I’d mention some other backlinking and traffic generation techniques I’m planning to try. Although these are more time consuming than things like forum profile backlinks, I am hoping they’re more powerful and definitely more relevant.
Guest Blogging
I’ve known for a long time that guest blogging can be extremely powerful, but for some reason I’ve always ignored it for my niche sites, as if the topics aren’t suited to guest blogging. But honestly this isn’t true. I’ve just had to think outside the box a little.
For example, if I have a product review about a tumble dryer, there’s probably not going to be a blog (that’s not a review blog like mine) that would be willing to accept guest blog posts, or that would be worth submitting to. Instead, I have to look for general cleaning blogs or household tips to submit to.
My Progress Today
So basically today, this is what I’ve been doing. Typing things like “general niche”+ submit article/ guest blogging into Google to find sites that would be willing to post my articles. This is more time consuming than it might seem! I found a few sites after some searching, but discarded a few because they had low page rank or just didn’t seem to get much traffic (judging by blog comments etc).
I’ve narrowed down a list of about 5 blogs in the general niche that accept guest articles and allow links. I’m going to try and write 10 articles for these (or outsource them, not sure yet) and submit them off. If they don’t all get accepted then I want to use them as blog posts as they’ll all cover different aspects of my niche. I would try to find other blogs to submit to but honestly there aren’t many available in this niche as far as I can see.
Future Backlinking Strategies
I also want to try press releases and have wanted to for a while. One of those things on my list that I haven’t gotten around to yet. The only trouble with this is that you need to come up with a newsworthy angle for the release, but if that’s possible I do think it can be a very powerful marketing tool. So I’m hoping to test this method some time in August as well.

Do keep up posted on the press release stuff. I’ve heard good things about Daniel Tan’s WSO and have been thinking about picking it up. I tried doing press releases once, but couldn’t really figure out how to write and format them, LOL. But I’ve heard they’re pretty effective if done right.
The guest blogging also seems like a really useful way to get high PR links – another thing I should really look into that I haven’t done yet…

Michelle – I think press releases are actually pretty simple but I also have a kind of block when it comes to them. I do have Daniel Tan’s WSO so that’s what I’m going to follow once I start!
I would love to know how the press release thing goes. I have never tried it myself but have always been curious.
Hope your other efforts pay off.

Hi Ruth,
interesting take on guest posting. It’s something I’ve wanted to get into for some time, but never really considered it for smaller niches. It may well work a treat for a blog I started recently though, so thanks for the suggestion.

Des – Hopefully I’ll have the time to do it soon and I’ll post the results.
I’ve been thinking about guest posts lately as well. I think some of my speakers apprehension kind of bleeds over into the online world lol. On problogger.com they are currently having a few guest bloggers right now. I think I’m going to do some research into what you really need to do in order to be successful at guest blogging. Seems like this would also be a helpful product if someone came out with a detailed plan for how to guest blog. Starting from researching blogs where you could do this, negotiating the terms of the guest posts (is it something reciprocal or not?), all the way to maybe creating a special landing page for people who come from that particular blog to yours. Wow so much to think about….guess its back to research lol.

Gabriel – I must admit I haven’t thought about all of that. For now, I’m focusing on smaller niche blogs to guest post on. If you could get a guest post on Problogger then I’ve no doubt you’d see huge benefits! I have my guest posts written up but haven’t submitted them yet, when I do I’ll post about it here.
