This Is What I Love About Amazon…

As you can see from my earnings page, Amazon doesn’t exactly earn me loads of money, but that’s understandable considering I’ve never focused on it.

But today when I logged in I saw this:

I only got 8 clicks, but there were 14 items ordered. Even better, those items were all ordered by the same person, from just one click on one of my sites. And none of the products were related to what my site was about. This site was just an Adsense site (one that doesn’t do well) and I included a couple of affiliate links.

Unfortunately the products are only about $20 each, so not too much commission (the commission will show in my earnings once those products are shipped). But it just goes to show the huge potential for Amazon customers to browse and end up buying a lot of random stuff!

    Ruth,
Congratulations. That is wonderful that someone ordered like that. I also like the way that the occasional (at least for me) order shows up. It just gives me a good feeling knowing that I really didn’t have to do anything to earn a little passive income.

Kidgas – That’s what I really love about Amazon. I get such random orders from my Hubs sometimes. Once I got an order for a $1500 camera!! That was a nice day :D

  2. Ruth I went to the Melbourne Problogger event this week and Darren Rowse shared how someone bought a $12,000 tractor on Amazon after having landed there via one of his links. His link had nothing to do with tractors but that’s what the person went on to buy, lol! Anything can happen on Amazon. :)

It’s little surprises like these that make this business fun I think.

Michelle – Nice! That’s really amazing. I love Amazon for stuff like that. And I totally understand how it ends up happening – I always buy random stuff from there myself (no $12,000 tractors mind you!)

    • Now there’s a niche I hadn’t thought about targetting ;)

I’m focusing my efforts on Amazon sites for the next 6 months. I’ve built some sites recently and just giving it focus is increasing my commissions. I’m looking forward to the Christmas season!

Clare – I think I’m also going to be focusing on Amazon like that too. Hopefully it’ll do well for us :D

  3. I’m getting more and more into Amazon, they really know how to convert once you send someone over to them.

The other good thing to remember is that shifting a few low $ items on Amazon will now raise your commission percentage for the rest of the month.

So it’s a good idea to promote some lower priced items that are an easier sale, along with your higher priced stuff.

Des – Very very good point which I missed. Yes now my rate is up to 6% instead of 4 thanks to that one buyer and one click :D Hope I’ll get some more sales this month.

Absolutely awesome. I love this about Amazon too!

Last month someone purchased a $479 product not related to any of my sites. It’s rare that that happens but it has a few times.

Forest – Nice! You don’t get much chance of that happening with other affiliate programs. Amazon is just huge!

  5. Affiliate programs seems to be a great way of earning a few dollars on the side with very little, if any effort on your part. The orignal seller does most of the advertising. Just be careful not to flood your family and friends with requests for purchase…then it becomes similar to that of Tupperware Salespeople, whose friends are sick of hosting those parties!

Sharon – I’m doing a different kind of affiliate marketing, building sites that will draw in traffic from search engines, so no bombarding my family with offers :)

  6. Ruth – it’s been a while, I’ve been swamped like Florida – but GREAT news on that! I had a few sales like that, too – and for low ticket items.

I’ve decided to target a mix, will make a post on that this upcoming week. That way I know I’ll actually be committed to doing it.

    Great stuff!

Two months ago I had two $200 purchases that were completely unrelated to my sites. One was a jewelry wall thing and another I don’t remember. I once had someone on ebay buy about $600 of mixed uncut gems from a click from a completely unrelated site. I love stuff like that. Unfortunately last month I somehow had zero people buy despite 140 clicks :S I don’t understand such wide fluctuations but it’s all part of the game I guess!
