Since I’ve started a new blog, I’ve decided I’m going to spend more time working on this blog than I have on others in the past. It got me thinking about the possibilities of working on just one blog for one hour every single day.
The truth is that, while we all put in probably more hours than we should, niche bloggers can find it hard to stick to one thing and really focus on it, giving it the attention that it deserves.
Many of us think that there is strength in numbers, that we can get small amounts from every single niche blog and keep replicating that until we reach a fulltime income.
This may be true, but it also fuels the part of our thinking that means we get bored and want to start something new before we’ve given something a real chance.
We might spend hours on a site one week, leave it for months, then go back to it again. In total it might add up to the same hours worked, but surely this lack of consistency must hurt our blogs?
Consistency is one of the things I’ve struggled with the most. I always come up with new ideas, I always get excited about new things, and I lose enthusiasm for whatever I’m working on at the time.
For once, I’m going to do my best to stick to something consistently. After a while I’m sure it won’t need so much hands-on work. But until it gets to that point, I’m going to work hard to keep things moving forward.

I found, before I quit working and became a full time blogger, that I needed at least two hours a day to grow my blog at the rate I needed to. If I’m honest, some days I managed 2 hours in the morning and 2 in the evening, then a further couple of sessions each weekend.
You really have got to work hard to make that break from part time to full time blogger, but once you do it becomes much easier.

There’s definitely a lot of hard work involved – it’s great that you became a full time blogger that way. I guess what I mean here are smaller niche blogs, though in reality I’d love to be able to focus so much energy on just one thing. Very true that it needs hard work – but it must definitely be worth it!

I can certainly see spending one hour each day on a blog to make it happen. I try to post on my current blog every other day or every 3 days at most. But I am working full time. I have a hard time getting much done after spending 12 hours at work.
I can’t imagine spending 4 hours, MikeCJ. What did you do with all that time spent?

I think it depends whether you’re working on smaller projects or larger projects, but I imagine with 4 hours a day you would be doing a lot of promotion work alongside the writing etc. This is what I am trying to do with my newest blog – spend an hour a day promoting, networking, writing and more. It’s very enjoyable to focus on it, but it does mean I’m spending less time on active income which is always a little risky!

Thanks for sharing this Ruth. It can be easy to get scrambled over doing many projects at once, focusing on one thing at a time usually means the quality of it will become better for people. I’m glad you stated to put more focus and be more consistent in this blog and looking forward to your progress.

Yes I feel like my new project is going to be much higher quality. It’s so hard to focus when it comes to working online and blogging sometimes!

I get the majority of my adsense cash from just a few blogs. I am ramping up my niche eforts to spread the lower ground and put my eggs in a few baskets…. However if one of these niche blogs starts to grow then I will devote more time to that.
I like my Frugal blog best of all and wish I could find an hour+ per day to work on it…. One day

Yes I think that’s a good strategy – spend a little time on a few things and see which ones of those seem to take the most. I know what you mean about not having an hour a day to work on one blog – that would also be one of my long term goals, to have more time to focus on one project.

I am lucky if I get 4 hours a week to work online. I am definitely falling behind!

I am sure you’re not falling behind, because you don’t have full time hours to be able to put into it. As long as you are moving forward, no matter at what pace, that is progress

This is good advice. I’m starting a project in February I’m kind of nervous about because I am working hard on my current blog I’m so proud of. On top of that I have my linux blog that I’m working on ideas for as well.
I’ve thought about doing a one hour deal for each blog and getting creative so I don’t feel so overwhelmed.
This is also good advice for commenting on blogs, subscribing and tweeting blogs as well. When you find a blog you can find a reason to stay at for a while, do it, get the most out of it so you provide your followers with some useful content instead of just racing to get a comment in, retweet something real fast and moving on. It would definitely show people care more than anything.

Eric – If you can do it and do it consistently then I’m sure you will do well. It’s great that you’re taking so much time to engage with other bloggers. Building relationships is also something that can really motivate you to carry on blogging.
