As I write this I’m surrounded by boxes. I might get up and forge a path to my desk in a moment, but I thought I’d add a quick blog post now while I’m sat with my laptop on the sofa.
This will be my last post for a few weeks. I’m moving on Saturday, my broadband is being disconnected on Friday (!!) and I’ve got a lot to do before then. After I move, I’m taking a well earned break. I’ve even told every single one of my clients that I’m not going to be working until September 6th at the earliest! Wow – it feels really good
What I’m Going To Do In My Break
As you can guess, a big reason for this break is simply to unpack, to relax a little after a very stressful run up to the move, and to settle into my new place (I don’t know about you, but working at home I get very set into a routine and when my surroundings change it can take me a while to properly adjust).
I’m not sure yet how long my broadband will take to transfer over, but it could be two weeks from my move date. I’ve bought a mobile broadband dongle so that, in the meantime, I can connect to mobile internet via 3G on my laptop, but there’s a 30 day download limit of 2GB for this. I really don’t know how much 2GB will let me do, but I know I can’t carry on watching videos, doing everything I normally do.
The point is I’m going to try not to do all the usual things I normally do to waste time. Watching videos, getting sidetracked. As well as relaxing and not working to a fixed schedule (I normally try to work 9-6 every day even though, of course, I don’t have to), I’m going to take the time out to really consider my “grand plan”.
There are so many aspects to my online business: writing, custom site setups, blog flipping, writing PLR content, and the various different kinds of passive niche sites I’ve got. As you all know, I’ve tried a lot but I’ve still got a long way to go in terms of creating a full time passive income. That’s partly why I find it so hard to focus – because I need to do the client work etc to bring the money in now, yet it really does detract from my own passive efforts.
I hope that removing myself from this huge jumble of work for a couple of weeks will help to give me some clarity. Hopefully next time I see you I’ll have a renewed energy for my online business (and perhaps a tighter definition of what that actually is).

Ruth,
Best of luck with the move and your attempt to achieve some clarity. You will be missed but not forgotten.

Kidgas – Thanks
Also I wanted to add that I’ll still be reading blogs like yours but might not be leaving so many comments.
Hope your move goes smoothly and you enjoy your break. It’s hard to get away from the computer when it is staring you in the face but being without internet will really help! Maybe I should unplug my internet for a few days…

Ruth,
I hope your move goes easy. My Husband and I promised ourselves we would hire someone next time we moved, but that never happened (I am incredibly cheap)
Try to relax some moving can take a toll on you physically and emotionally!

Good luck with your move! Hope you get some time to rest and come back with lots of energy! Starting your own online business must be a lot of work.
I love your blog and am looking forward to reading more.
Hey Ruth.
Glad you are taking advantage of your situation and taking some time off. Have a good few settling weeks and see you when you get back.

Everyone – Thanks so much for the nice comments! Hopefully I won’t be disconnected from my fast broadband and away from your blogs for very long
I know what you mean about needing clarity, and sometimes feeling like you have too much on your plate. I decided to focus on one specific niche site (okay, it turned into two!) for the summer and that really helped. Best of luck!

Maria – That sounds like a great idea. One of the plans I’ve decided on is to focus on one site at a time too.
Great to hear you’re taking some time out for a sabbastical following the move. Moves can be stressful at the best of times, but it sounds like you need a holiday too.
There is a lot to be said for taking time away from the job to reinvigorate the creative juices. Some companies in France, for instance, close for 18 months every four years, just to regroup…with themselves!
If you afford to forgo the income, then why not!
Best of Luck!

Sharon – That sounds crazy! But I can definitely see why it’s necessary to take the time out. It’s already helped me so much.

RUTH!! It’s been too long – you’re so singing my tune, it’s ridiculous! BTW, I have Skype, but it’s OFF because I’m too busy writing (the last time I had it on was the “hey there!” and then that was it).
Enjoy your time off – and I RESONATE with your angst.
I haven’t tried all you have done – but I tell you what, it feels the same.
You have a passive/active income battle, and the exigencies of the moment clamor for “NOW” money…(NOT that I’m complaining, it’s just tough to juggle).
Someone said that she focused on 1-2 sites this summer – and Michelle at Passive Income Online say the same thing: focus.
I wish I could do more of it! What a great read, it helps knowing I’m not the only one pulling out my hair.

Ruth – just wanted to ask you about blog flipping (again) – are you still doing that as a main source of income as you were?
And, if you don’t mind: how much time do you spend ranking the sites first?

James – Thanks for asking, been very busy but settling in a bit. Just can’t wait to get my broadband! It’s unbelievable how long it’s taking to transfer lol. Anyway, I wanted to add about the website flipping for anyone’s benefit (even though I emailed you)….
As far as I could tell the last time I sold some sites on Flippa (in June), startup sites aren’t getting as much interest. Some sites did always struggle, but I balanced that by adding great support and trying to show I cared etc. But I started to get effected in June and stopped flipping on Flippa for a while (not for good, just taking a break). I do have a list of site buying customers which is good for getting private work, but if you’re just getting into it I would spend more time getting traffic and/ or earnings. My sites didn’t have either but the market has become flooded so I think it’s necessary now unfortunately.
