I went to an aqua aerobics class this morning – something I do every now and again – and as I exercised I started thinking about the similarities between that and internet marketing.
The instructor kept saying “you get out what you put in”, and I worked hard to try and push myself. So many of the women there barely even move, I wonder why they even bother coming at all. They just float around, probably even feeling cold because they aren’t moving, and effectively waste the few pounds they pay for that hour, as well as the time they put in to drive there, get changed and take the class.
Why bother?
The same is true for internet marketing. If you only put in a small effort, you could end up wasting all your time (and money if you pay for anything) by not pushing it far enough – by only really making yourself think that you’re doing something important, but ultimately just putting things off or being lazy.
That said, my day’s been very disrupted and I haven’t made my target. I did put in a good amount of work, though. I am going to keep on being disrupted til Tuesday actually – so I’m going to do my best to put in the work but I’ve just got to accept it if I can’t complete all my writing – got to put my client work first at the moment. I still feel that real drive to make this work, though, and I’m going to make sure I put in the effort.

Good points and great analogy Ruth. It seems the harder one works the “luckier” they get.

Mike,
I have always thought that people make their own luck, except for the powerball winners-well I guess they had to buy the ticket!

Mike & Kelly – You’re right, you build your own luck with the work you put in. Like I said recently when I changed up my blog and started my new journey mid-May, I just kept wondering why I wasn’t “lucky” but now I know it’s because I didn’t put in the work
“and effectively waste the few pounds they pay for that hour,”—-Ok that confused me at first, I am thinking exercise-weight loss-pounds. Not money! If I remember correctly Ruth you are in London!
I actually love doing this niche stuff, maybe not so much the writing, but everything else is fun. I can tell it takes a lot of work, and a certain kind of person. I agree with you though if people are not following through, then they will basically get no where!

You are right. One thing I have learnt from IM is that you only reap what you sow.
Disruption is part of the game in IM.
I recomend you get yourself a timetable and a set of tasks for every day/week.
When I first started IM in Feb this year, I would spend 5 hours on the internet and yet only produced 1 hour worth of real IM work.
After implementing the timetable plan, my earnings increased!

Dennis – I do generally try to work to a timetable too. I’ve gone through many different productivity routines for myself, but I do have to change things up every now and again to keep it effective. The thing is I have been working full time online for a long time now, but still often don’t have enough time for my own websites (I work for clients mainly), so that’s where I need to find the balance. Thanks for visiting!
I’m in a similar pickle with client work having to come first, got about 3 solid days of work that needs doing before I can concentrate back on my blogs…. Agony! I could work overtime but really am realising the importance of taking some time away each day.
As for the floating women, great analogy…. I am definitely one of those floating women some days…. writing a little here, reading a blog post etc etc, on the whole though I work hard.

Forest – Yeah it really does get frustrating when you can’t even look at your own stuff for a while doesn’t it? And lol you make it quite funny that I described them as “floating women” but it’s true, we all have our days like that. I feel I’m getting better too though
Just out of curiosity I would like to know what “program/system” you are using to make money as an affiliate.
Where did you learn your IM stuff from?

Dennis – Good question! Well, I started doing SEO writing literally because I really needed cash and that lead me to the idea that people were somehow making money with my articles. Then I joined The Niche Blogger (this is a great program for beginners and very friendly). I have tried a lot of different systems though but ultimately I am still sticking to those “niche blogs” now, meaning they have a good amount of posts (starting with 20 scheduled at 2 per week but I’ll add more at a later date) and are marketed in a wide variety of ways. I never really stuck at anything and focused until now so I’m hoping I’ll finally make things work!
True-er words have never been spoken. If you do the work, you get the results. I guess that’s one of the reasons why we tend to work too hard and don’t take enough time off. At least it is for me

This was the point I was trying to make in another comment…
So? You have other commitments. Yes you get what you give, but if some days you can’t give your all, just pick up where you left off.

Dennis above mentioned “reaping what you sow”. That is not only true in internet marketing, but anything in life from work, education, even relationships. It is so profoundly true and yet people forget it all the time.
People will end up thinking that the successful are just lucky, but most of the time, folks just fail to see all the extra effort that goes into that success. I love Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Outliers”. It could easily be called “reaping and sowing”.

Kidgas – Very good point. I think also that also makes us remember that our business isn’t everything in life – we’re all building this business in the hopes that we’ll not just reap the success of the money etc but that we’ll be reaping the success in the way that it helps us do what matters in life.
I couldn’t agree more. Yes indeed “you only get out what you put in”.
A blogger, web designer or internet marketer always goes through a huge learning curve before that succeed. This is the pain barrier.
Things take time to succeed. A great audiobook related to business is “Earl Nightingale Lead The Field”.

says:
James – Thanks for visiting. There is a high learning curve too, but sometimes even when you know enough there’s still a barrier simply because it can be hard to focus on what matters.
Ruth,
I imagine you in the pool turning the water a churning white.
You move at a faster pace than most and you think about where you have been.
So simple an exercise, but with water added, a semi invisible force takes over that makes it 10 times harder to perform.
Lack of hard work and a plan is like walking through water. It’s harder.
As always; An Inspiration…
Thank You Ruth

Nice points Ruth! Too often I think I’m working but really I’m just procrastinating. Like now…. that header on site X could so with a change in photoshop…STOP IT ALEX!
IN relation to the topic in the comments thread about luck, it reminded me of a quote from famous ex golfer Gary Player “The more I practice, the luckier I get”
Good to take into any industry or field I think
See you soon Ruth

Ahh procrastination – I fall foul of that all of the time. It’s so “easy” to play with sites and make them look pretty – but it doesn’t bring in the money.
With your aerobics analogy Ruth I could do with a Biggest Loser style trainer to yell at me until I’ve completed what’s actually on my to do list that would generate income!

Hi Ruth,
This is one that I can really relate to. It is so easy to come up with a plan that seems like there is no way to lose, and then when you start implementing it, it feels like you are walking through a pool filled with jello.
It is quite easy to get distracted…
But, it does seem that you are doing something right.
Have a great day & NEVER give in!
